How do I shut my ipad up?
QI shattered my old ipad’s screen so had to get a new model. Setting up the new one wasn’t too taxing because I only really use it for email, the web, Facebook and Facebook Messenger. However, I now have a problem in that Messenger chirrups whenever a new message arrives and my new ipad lacks the physical switch that I could flip to silence my old ipad! I’ve tried turning the volume all the way down, but that doesn’t stop the highpitched whistles. Is there a way to shut them up when I need? Mo Parsons
AIt’s possible to manually edit which notifications and alerts individual apps can show or sound, but for your purposes the answer is to use a software button that Apple introduced when it removed the ipad’s physical mute/rotation-lock switch. It lurks in Control Centre and, if you’ve not yet found this feature, bring it into view by swiping up from the bottom of the screen. Now just look for the button labelled with a bell icon (see screenshot), and tap it to silence all alerts and notifications. To enable them again, tap it once more. Incidentally, note that this button works independently of the volume control, so if the volume is up you’ll still hear audio from music, videos, etc.
