Amazon selling ‘fake’ 16TB SSDS for under £100

-

Amazon was continuing to sell what appeared to be fake SSDS for hours after being notified about them.

The devices were first spotted by Desire Athow, managing editor at Computeractive sister site Techradar Pro, who reported them to Amazon.

Some of the devices are sold by Sajiulas ( 1 in our screenshot), a trademark of little-known company Shenzhen Daba Electronic Technology.

One listing on Amazon’s US site (www.amazon.com) is for a ‘16TB portable SSD external hard drive’ at the implausibly low price of $109.99 (about £95). The only 16TB SSD we’ve seen is the Sabrent Rocket XTRM-Q, priced $2,900 (£2,400).

Amazon was even listing the Sajiulas SSD as its top new release in the External Solid State Drives category 2, making it appear legitimate to casual shoppers.

Searching for ‘16TB SSD’ on Amazon UK produced many similar results, with most priced £99.99, and one selling for just £39.11.

Brands selling them included Aanviniy, Hanvinbs and WUZ – all unknown to us. Some had paid to appear as a ‘Sponsored’ listing in Amazon’s results. All the SSDS have just one- or two-star reviews, with customers slamming the devices as a scam.

Amazon responded to Athow by saying: “Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We’ve passed this feedback along to the appropriate team on your behalf. Let us know if you have any further questions or concerns.”

However, the SSDS were still on sale more than 30 hours after Athow wrote about them online (www. snipca.com/44216).
