Rewind and fast-forward picture-in-picture videos
Firefox’s picture-in-picture (PIP) mode offers a handy way to pop out videos from sites such as Youtube into a floating player window, so you can continue watching them while getting on with other tasks. To switch to PIP mode, simply click the icon on a video that looks like a big screen pointing at a smaller one. If you don’t see this, click the browser’s three-line menu button, choose Settings, then General and tick ‘Enable picture-in-picture video controls’ in the Browsing section.
The picture-in-picture player includes buttons to play and pause videos, mute the volume and return the player to its tab. Firefox 107 – released in November – adds three further controls. These let you rewind and fast-forward videos by five seconds per click, as well as view them full screen, but you’ll need to enable these controls manually.
To do so, type about:config into Firefox’s address bar, press Enter and click ‘Accept the Risk and Continue’. Search for the preference media. videocontrols.picture-in-picture. improved-video-controls.enabled – you won’t need to type all that, as it will auto-complete at some point, but you can save time by copying it from our Pastebin account at www.snipca.com/44029. Double-click the preference, or click the Toggle button next to it, to change its value to ‘true’, then restart Firefox.
When the browser reopens, click the PIP button on a video and the new Backwards (see screenshot above), Forwards and Fullscreen buttons will be included in the floating player’s controls.
