Is Cybereason Ransomfree still safe?

- Norman Clark

QI’ve been guided by your recommendations for many years. I was scrolling through some early screenshots of my Windows desktop and spotted a program I used many moons ago, called Cybereason. That made me wonder whether or not you would still consider it wise to use it alongside my current security program (which is Norton 360). Or is this program a waste of time?

AWe’re not sure exactly which Cybereason product you’re referring to, but we’re pretty sure it’s Ransomfree. We recommended this in passing way back in 2017, as part of Issue 503’s cover feature on protecting your computer from ransomware attacks.

But six years in the technology industry is a lifetime. Windows 10 was still pretty new then, but we’re now already expecting Window 12, so it is wise to be cautious of any suggestions we or anyone else made in the past – simply because things move on quickly.

In this instance, Cybereason decided to kill off Ransomfree in 2018. The company said in a statement that existing installations of the product would continue to function (www.snipca. com/45398 – see screenshot 1 ). However, all updates ended at that time.

As a result, while the program is not likely to be harmful, keeping it installed and running will offer you nothing more than a false sense of security. This is because the techniques it uses to spot and remove ransomware will only ever become more outdated.

In short, then, Ransomfree is now effectively useless and you should uninstall it. To do that, click Start followed by the Settings cog and then Apps. Next, click ‘Apps & features’ and find the entry for Ransomfree. Click to select it and then click Uninstall 2, and then confirm by clicking Uninstall once more.
