Award could help transform the lives of young writers

-

» YOUNG wordsmiths have a chance to get support which could transform their careers with the opening of applications for an annual fund.

Recipients of the Young and Talented Cornwall Creative Writing Award will receive one-to-one mentoring from established Cornish authors, up to £1,000 to develop a project or buy equipment and a £150 book voucher.

Rebecca Pearce, 22, from Porthtowan, was matched with author Cathy Rentzenbrink, and used her award to attend the London Book Fair where she made connections and gained inspiration.

“I can sometimes doubt myself and lack confidence, but the award’s recognised my talent,” she said. “I have something that validates me. It goes beyond my degree.”

Tayfun Zaidi, 21, from Falmouth, was matched with Patrick Gale, author of titles such as Mother’s Boy, Rough Music and Notes From An Exhibition.

Tayfun is using his grant to fund a trip to Denmark to research his next fantasy novel.

“I have someone from the industry, with huge experience,

❝❝ I’d never have been able to even begin to think about doing this without the award

offering a new perspective on my writing,” Tayfun said.

“I’d never have been able to even begin to think about doing this without the award.”

The award is sponsored by Falmouth University and Seasalt Cornwall, supported by the Arts Council National Lottery Project Grants and overseen by writer Philip Marsden.

An initiative of Young and Talented Cornwall (the Lord Lieutenant’s Fund), the award aims to help talented individuals achieve their potential, regardless of their financial situation.

“We’re now beginning to see the first group of young writers complete their year of mentoring, and it’s tremendous to see what a difference it’s made,” Philip said.

“Having the confidence to keep writing isn’t easy at the start, nor is it always clear how exactly to develop your particular talent. Our mentors can help steer young writers in the right direction.”

Applications are open to anyone aged 16 to 24. Visit www. youngandtalentedcornwall.org, @youngandtalentedcornwall on Instagram, TikTok and LinkedIn and @YTCornwall on Facebook and X.
