LPRIME CATTLE

odge & Thomas at Truro Livestock Market on Wednesday, May 15 reports an entry of 22 UTM & OTM prime cattle, 32 cull cows, 105 store cattle, 39 rearing calves & stirks and 410 finished & store sheep.

A brilliant entry of Prime Cattle with a solid trade to match. The usual quality forward from Messrs W S Gay & Son of St Allen who topped the section at 272p/kg for their 620kg Limousin steer, with a second Limousin steer from the same stable at 269p/kg. A quality run of big framey South Devon steers from Rosemary Hocking of St Buryan all weighing heavy and looking very well sold, despite being un-tested, NON-FABBL and requiring some further finishing. Top picks of the run to 270p/kg twice with further bullocks at 267p/kg (£1,962), 258p/kg twice (£1,894 & £1,904) and 250p/kg (£1,955). Top of a consignmen­t from Messrs E P & P A Jenkin of Helston to 249p/kg for a classy 648kg steer. A short run of heifers peaked at 270p/kg for a good 624kg Continenta­l from Messrs W H & L M Williams & Son of Allet, with a 619kg heifer from Messrs Jenkin at 256p/kg thereafter. Steers - Top Prices Limousin to 272p (620kg) for Messrs W S Gay & Son of St Allen. Heifers - Top Prices Continenta­l to 270p (624kg) for Messrs W H & L M Williams & Son of Allet. Truro Steers Premium to 272.0p/kg av. 261.4p/kg. Prime to 237.0p/kg av. 231.0p/kg. Truro Heifers Premium to 270.0p/kg av. 255.7p/kg. Prime to 236.0p/kg. All Steers – 255.3p/kg. All Heifers – 247.4p/kg.

CULL COWS

The Cull trade is fully ablaze with never-beforeseen prices, an unpreceden­ted demand and all makes and models highly contested. An overall Beef Type average of 201.9p/kg! Topping the beef types was a cracking young Simmental cow from Mr B Cowell of Wendron at 247p/kg, with a good Limousin cow from Messrs W T Bryant & Sons of St Martin close behind at 240p/kg. Another heavy-weight 872kg Limousin cow from Messrs Bryant realised 227p/kg (£1,979) and a Limousin cow from Tregaddra Farms of Helston parted away for 220p/kg (£1,751). A good Hereford steer from Messrs R G Olver & Son of St Stephen marketed for 219p/ kg (£1,949), with a second steer from the same Vendor at 215p/kg (£1,914). Many more quality beef types all looked well placed which are too numerous to mention. The trade for Dairy types is no easier, topping at 190p/kg for a Friesian cow from Messrs L T Harvey & Sons of Penzance, with a Friesian cow from Messrs J A Sweet & Partners of St Newlyn East hot on the heels at 188p/kg. Messrs R, N W G & P J Worden of Gunwalloe were next with their Friesian cow at 180p/kg and another Friesian from Messrs Sweet at 179p/kg.

Beef Types – Leading Prices Simmental x to 247p (484kg) for Mr B Cowell of Wendron, Helston. Dairy Types – Leading Prices Friesian x to 190p (720kg) for Messrs L T Harvey & Sons of Newbridge, Penzance.

STORE CATTLE

Tighter numbers this week saw demand elevated across the board with fewer bullocks to go around. A super trade from start to finish saw steers peak at £1570 for a first class trio of 14 month old Charolais’ from Messrs W F Palmer & Son of Ruan-high-lanes, Truro, who sold a further pair at the same age to £1350 thereafter. A 2-year-old Hereford from Mr C G Andrew of St Austell sold away at £1420, followed by a grand bunch of five British Blues from Messrs C & V Ellis & Son of St Erth, realising £1395. R M Farming Co of Sticker, St Austell sold a single 26-month-old Hereford at £1365, followed by a trio of 2-year-old Angus’ from

Messrs A A & D P Eddy of Hayle at £1340. Younger steers selling to £1360 for a very smart bunch of five 13-month-old South Devons from Mr C Weldhen of St Columb who marketed a further five at £1160. A 12-month-old Angus from Messrs J H Pellow & Sons of Carnhell Green sold at £1180, followed by a pair of Angus from Ms E Macaulay of Constantin­e at £1040 with a good run of 1-year-old steers thereafter from Mr B Cowell of Helston achieving £930 for Charolais and £760 for Simmentals. Heifers saw a top call of £1350 on behalf of Messrs A A and D P Eddy for their 28-month-old Shorthorn, followed by two pairs of 2-year-old British Blues from Messrs C & V Ellis & Son at £1280 and £1265. Messrs S & L Awdry of Trendeal, Truro sold a 27-month-old Charolais at £1250, whilst Mr C Weldhen saw his trio of 1-year-old South Devon heifers trade at £1010.

Steers – leading prices 2yo Hereford x to £1420 for Mr C G Andrew of St Austell. 1½yo Hereford x to £1320 for Mr M D Young of Redruth. 1yo Charolais x to £1570 for Messrs W F Palmer & Son of Ruan-high-lanes. Heifers – leading prices 2yo Shorthorn x to £1350 for Messrs A A & D P Eddy of Hayle. 1yo South Devon x to £1010 for Mr C Weldhen of St Columb.

REARING CALVES

Only a small entry on offer in this section, but vendors well rewarded for their entry, seeing a sharp trade throughout. Yet again an entry of 7 month old stirks from Messrs A D & J A Bray from St Martin led the way with their 3 Simmental x steers making £705, a British Blue x steer at £625, and their pair of Limousin x heifers looking well sold at £595. The younger weaned calves at around 4 months old saw a consignmen­t from Messrs W Marsh & Son from St Stephen sell to a top of £655 for a Limousin x steer and further Limousin x & Aberdeen Angus x steers making £510. Best of the Best young milk calves saw a top call of £345 for a British Blue x bull sold by Messrs R G Olver & Son from St Stephen and Messrs Bray sold 3 Limousin x bulls for £338, £325 & £310. The best of the Aberdeen Angus x bulls to £230 and £200 for Messrs Searle & Son from Penzance, and Hereford x bulls to £200 for Mr J Wilkinson from Constantin­e. Only a few heifer calves on offer with the best Limousin x to £152 for Mr K R Williams from Tehidy. More calves are required to meet demand.

Bulls British Blue x to £345 for Messrs R G Olver & Son of St Stephen. Heifers Limousin to £152 for K R Williams of Tehidy Male Weaned Calves. Simmental x to £705 thrice for Messrs A D & J A Bray of St Martin, Helston. Female Weaned Calves Limousin x to £595 twice for Messrs A D & J A Bray of St Martin, Helston.

NEW SEASON LAMB

A good entry and lively trade. Keen demand particular­ly for the fresh types. Selling to a top price of £207.50 for heavy weights from Messrs M & S Baxter of Wendron sold to J V Richards Ltd of Perranwell Station. Setting the premium to 451p/kg for a smart pen of 41.1kg lambs from Messrs C R Elliot and Partners of Portloe purchased by R J Trevarthen Ltd of Roskrow. Leading Averages: 451p/kg for 41.10kg lambs from Messrs C R Elliott & Partners of Portloe, Truro.

FINISHED HOGGETS

Numbers back though a touch more bite in the trade seeing premium hoggs to 359/kg on behalf of Mr R A Coad of Cubert, Newquay for his topping pair of 58kg Texels. Overall top price achieved by Messrs S J Dustow & Son of Ladock, Truro who sold a cracking pen of four 68.7kg Charollais’ to £210.50, followed by Mr R A Coad’s pair previously mentioned at £208. Hoggs weighing over 52kg averaged £186 per head.

CULL EWES

Top prices up yet again on the week to new record highs with ewes selling to £230.00 twice. Firstly, for Mr D T Burnett of Roche for a super conformati­on Charollais, and second for Cregan Gate Partners of Grampound. Overall, the ewe averages was £147.00 across the section. Rams to £143.00 for a Charollais from Mr T D Retallick of St Columb. 2T (Sheep) to £149.50 for a pen from Mr J C Trenerry of Truro.

STORE SHEEP

A reasonable entry of varied quality saw hoggs top at £134 on behalf of Mr W G Bray of Mullion, Helston followed by a single from Mr J Parke of Skinners Bottom at £121 and Mr J Bobbin of Castlegate, for his trio at £111. New Season stores to £110 on behalf of Mrs S A Scholes of North Country, Redruth, followed by the best pick from Mr W G Bray’s consignmen­t at £107. Mr A T Jones of St Austell sold double couples to £178 and singles to £152.
