NATIONAL TRUST CHRISTMAS EVENTS
The National Trust’s beautiful country houses in Cornwall are all dressed for Christmas, showing visitors how their occupants would have celebrated the festive season down through the ages from the Tudor traditions at Trerice near Newquay to lavish Victorian decorations at Lanhydrock near Bodmin.
Special events take place at a number of properties throughout December, with something for every member of the family.
At Trerice a Tudor Christmas is being celebrated with the chance to decorate your own plaster baubles for the Christmas tree. Father Christmas will be on hand to talk about the tales and traditions of Christmas for around 30 minutes and all children will receive a present. There are additional charges on top of admission fees for these events, which take place on weekends in December.
At Trelissick, near Truro, there’s the chance to meet not only Father Christmas but also his reindeer. On various dates in December Father Christmas will be telling festive stories in the stables (£5 for children including a gift). You can see Santa’s reindeer on 1, 8, 15 and 22 December between 11.30 to 2.30pm and there’s no additional charge for this event. The grounds and house at Trelissick will be illuminated throughout the month including new pathways.
Lanhydrock, near Bodmin, is a beautiful country estate which was home to the Agar-Robartes family. It is done up in its Victorian finery throughout December when you can discover many of the Christmas traditions that emerged during the Victorian era. The idea of Santa Claus, Christmas trees, cards, crackers, stockings and public holidays all emerged during Queen Victoria’s reign.
At Trengwainton Gardens near Penzance, tickets for Father Christmas’s Grotto and the Lantern Walk sold out in October, but there is the chance to visit the National Trust shop on the evening of 14 December and get a 10% discount off all retail purchases. Linger by the cosy log burner with a complimentary glass of mulled wine and a mince pie while the Christmas songs ease you into the festive spirit.
Some events may make an additional charge beyond normal admission fees. Visit nationaltrust.org.uk for details.
