HEY, HOW DO I WEAR… PVC trousers? Here’s how
Nail the PVC trend without looking like something out of Christian Grey’s closet. Your vinyl lesson starts here
1 BEYOND BLACK
You’ll see tonnes of black PVC on the high street this season, but the smart money’s also on dark shades of navy and garnet – as actress Kiernan Shipka proves. Look for buttons, zips and back pockets so they look more like trousers and less like leggings (or Catwoman’s onesie).
2 COLOUR BLOCK
Round of applause for Kiernan for pairing her slick skinnies with a tomato-red roll-neck. It would be easy to pair these with a safe, plain black top, but a bold colour is brave in a good way. The key here is the lack of skin on show – a red halterneck would be too vampy. So, go wild with colour, but stay covered up.
3 EASY HAIR & MAKE-UP
Severe hairstyles are a definite DON’T with the PVC trend. Loose waves or an undone ponytail are all you need. Keep make-up fresh and simple. Dramatic winged liner, crazy curls and slicked-back ponies would place you firmly in the ’80s, which may look cool on the runway, but doesn’t translate as well in real life. Tinted moisturiser, defined brows, a lick of mascara and a nude lip are all you need.
4 WEAR AND CARE
Wipe off spills with a damp sponge, hang outside to freshen up when weather permits, and hand-wash in lukewarm water when absolutely necessary. Hang inside out to dry (but not on a clip hanger or it will mark) away from any heat source – radiators, sun, Jamie Dornan – to avoid the PVC melting and bonding to cotton fabrics.
5 A SIMPLE SHOE
A classic black court (in matte leather, not patent, otherwise there’d be too much shine) shows enough of your foot to elongate your leg and break up the outfit.
