TRY THE TREND Why we want a pony for Christmas
It’s party season and the ponytail’s back (minus the scrunchie and with a twist)
1 THE DRESSAGE PONY
DIFFICULTY RATING 2/3 First, canter to the haberdashery department to buy black velvet ribbon, twice the length of your hair. Ribbon acquired, centre-part your hair, secure it in a low ponytail and douse in a strong-hold hairspray like Umberto Giannini Supermodel Shape (£7). Tie the ribbon at the base of your ponytail and criss-cross wrap it down the length, tying part-way down. Continue, leaving the end of your pony free. Tie the ribbon and trot out the door.
2 THE UNTAMED PONY
DIFFICULTY RATING 2/3 The inspiration behind the hair at Prabal Gurung’s A/W 16 show was a woman lost in the woods… Well, that’s fashion for you. You can create your very own dishevelled texture, even if the only wilderness you’re entering is your local boozer. First, to add volume, work a dollop of Ouai Soft Mousse (£22) through towel-dried hair and spray some Bumble And Bumble Surf Foam Spray (£22) through the ends. Blow-dry, raking with your fingers. Then, starting at each ear, twist your hair inwards until you reach the nape of your neck and secure with a hair tie. Massage with your fingers to add texture. Random twigs optional.
3 THE TWISTED PONY
DIFFICULTY RATING 3/3 According to top session stylist Syd Hayes, the secret to a good ponytail is all in the prep.“I anchor ponytails with a strong mousse (try GHD Total Volume Foam, £14.95). To recreate this twisted tail, brush your hair back into a low, tight ponytail and secure. Twist four sections around your curling tong (or use BaByliss Curl Pods, £60). Remove once cool, brush your hair around your hand into a smooth coil and spritz with hairspray.”
