THE MOTIVATOR
Mallory Brown, social entrepreneur and director of the CrowdRise 24 Hours Of Impact project Platform CrowdRise Raised £175,763*
After earning a degree in economics and management, Mallory Brown, 30, trekked through Southeast Asia and South America. Keen to combine her new wanderlust with her skill set, she set up a company that provides clothes to people in need and consults with global charities. In 2015, she launched her first “flash fundraiser” via the site CrowdRise, with a target that had to be reached in 24 hours. She raised $10,954 (around £8,426), more than double her goal, which prompted CrowdRise’s CEO Robert Wolfe to recruit her as a partner. Together they run 24-hour challenges for global efforts, which have included Mexico (for education), Las Vegas (to tackle homelessness) and Greece (to support Syrian refugees). “It’s a lot of work, but crowdfunding is wonderful because there’s no barrier to entry,” she says.
SECRET TO SUCCESS “Just because you’re passionate, doesn’t mean the rest of the world will be,” Brown says. To connect emotionally with her donors, she films personalised videos that show how the money raised is being used – which results in more repeat donations.
