THE BASICS
Before any job hunt, follow social-media guru Jen Thorne’s steps to success
1From images to words, have a detox and clear out anything you might not want an employer to see. Bad language and any photos that would make your nan wince should hit the virtual bin.
2Make sure you have a consistent presence on at least two of the big four: Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat and Facebook. Double checking privacy settings is key, too – some are complicated, and it’s easy for past content to slip through the net. Log out, clear your browser history and search for yourself – this is what a stranger (or potential employer) will see.
3Master what Jessica Miller-Merrell, founder of workplace resource site Workology, calls the ‘social media mullet’ – you know, business in the front, party in the back. That means keeping roughly 70% of your posts business-appropriate, and 30% personal. Lead with the professional, and once you’ve got that down, add in your hobbies and fun photos – this is what will help differentiate you.
