HOW TO WIN AT STREET STYLE

The rules the fashion elite abide by

Embrace the season’s most aesthetically challenged footwear

1 WHY IT WORKS

Think of the biker boot as your steadfast sartorial saviour, here to inject some edge into the season’s girliest looks. There’ll be plenty of occasions that call for sky-high courts and ankle-twisting platforms this spring, so when you can, revel in the cool girl’s walk-anywhere option that goes with everything.

2 DREAM BOOTS

Dr Martens, CAT Footwear and Blundstone are the classic, can’t-go-wrong brands for tough boots, so start there. Or trawl Ebay for vintage versions of this season’s Chloé army boot. Black is best but deep chestnut brown and navy blue are unexpectedly chic, too. Avoid brights at all costs – unless you want to look like an extra from The Disney Club.

3 WEAR WITH

Our favourite way to wear the tough boot is with contrasting frilly florals and granny tweeds (rule of thumb: the more feminine the style, the better the pairing), but streetwear and fishnets work as well. Dungarees, jeans, cosy jumpers… they’ll all be given a fresh, confident twist.

4 COMFORT CARE

Thick leather boots usually need a breaking-in period. Get a leather conditioner (try Dr Martens Wonder Balsam, £6) to hydrate and soften the boot. Then layer up thick, tall socks underneath to stretch the boot and protect yourself from blisters. Do calf-raisers and squatting motions to bend the leather as much as possible, then wear them around the house or on short walks until they feel ready for all-day duty.
