’70s style?

WHY IT WORKS

Designers had Saturday Night Fever this season, with a slew of shows (see Chloé, Anna Sui, Missoni…) offering up hallmarks of the disco decade. Veronika Heilbrunner’s got it all going on at once, but makes it work by keeping her colour palette in the same family.

TONE IT DOWN

You can take nearly any element of ’70s-inspired dressing and blend it with 2018 styling basics. For example, Veronika’s argyle pullover would look just as chic with straight-leg blue jeans and ankle boots. Similarly, her flared trousers would add just the right touch to a less ’70s look.

ACCESSORISE

Seventies-style add-ons can quickly take you into cheap costume territory. Add some tinted lenses, a fringed bag or some platform boots – sometimes one item is all you need. If you’re doing head-totoe period style, keep your accessories modern instead.

KEY PIECES

Shearling, corduroy, trippy prints, oversized sleeves and cuffs and, of course, plenty of denim all pay the right amount of styling homage. Just make sure at least one accessory is modern (like Veronika’s shoulder bag), so you don’t look like you’re off to your parents’ fancy-dress bash.
