STEP SIDEWAYS
Why getting crabby could help your career
Work starting to resemble Groundhog Day? Promotion looking as likely as a “clean” Brexit? And yet… you don’t want to leave your company entirely? Then take a crab-like stroll sideways. The corporate world calls this “lateral transferring”, and it basically involves moving teams within the same business and staying roughly within the same pay bracket to increase your skill set. Pick a role that has some crossover with your current one, and give your boss plenty of warning, advises Beverley Nicholas, regional talent director at Michael Page Recruitment. “Offer to support them in hiring and training your replacement, too,” she adds. This way, you’ll be the only one getting crabby.
