Professor Green helped open this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show, Kelly Brook is This Morning’s new gardening correspond­ent, while the Royal Horticultu­ral Society’s student membership has swelled by 1,300%. Proof that a pastime once reserved for your grandpa is now as hip as fermenting vinegars in jam jars. “Getting up close and personal with soil is also proven to have a significan­t effect on mental health,” says Jo Arnell, a garden designer beloved by the fashion set. (Turns out there’s a bacteria found in it called mycobacter­ium vaccae, which stimulates production of the happy hormone serotonin.)

Not got a patch of your own? Try a multi-sensory window box instead. For a fragrant, edible display that lasts all year, Arnell suggests mixing frothy bronze fennel with purple-tinged Thai basil and variegated pineapple mint, finished with the tiny trailing mauve flowers of lemon thyme. Just maybe don’t put them all in the same salad…
