MOTHER LOVE

- Fashion Director AMY BANNERMAN Photographer MATTHEW EADES

They’ve held our hands through thick and thin and been our biggest champions, but they may not always have agreed with our sartorial choices. We asked eight mothers what they’ve always wanted to see their daughters wear and these brave women agreed to let their mums style them…

CLARA AMFO & MUM GRACE

Grace: “I like my daughter to dress well; light make-up, not too much, bright colours, nice shapes and a good length. A full-on gown with beautiful bold colours – something designer maybe. She suits wine, gold, peach and red. I want her to be in the best clothes.” @claraamfo @whatsappmama

Clara wears: Dress, £360, Badgley Mischka at The Outnet. Earrings, £15.99, Zara. Necklace, £95, Vintage Swarovski at Susan Caplan

PAISLEY GILMOUR & MUM RUTH

Ruth: “I would say that we went through various stages when Paisley was young… from those great big cord trousers constantly dragging on the floor until they frayed through to the punk stage with tartan trousers, safety pins, leopard-print-dyed mohawk hair and piercings. I would love to see her in something a bit more feminine and fitted than her usual style… ’40s-inspired but with a little twist of quirkiness. Oh, and any colour except black!” @paisleyrgilmour

Paisley wears: Cardigan, £59.99, Zara. Dress, £129, Ghost. Socks, her own. Shoes, £119, Dr Martens

GEORGIA COLLINS & MUM MADELEINE

Madeleine (left, with granddaughter Edie): “I’d love to see George in something tailored, structured and classic. It could be a full-blown suit or just something elegant. It’s difficult to dress someone who already has their own imitable style, though. I’m used to seeing her in jeans or loose floral dresses with heavy boots and chunky rings. The truth is, she looks amazing whatever she wears!” @georgialday

Georgia wears: Jacket, £595; trousers, £395, both Joseph. Blouse, £280, Equipment. Earrings, £595, Vintage Givenchy at Susan Caplan. Necklaces, all her own

CHARLOTTE PATMORE & MUM KAREN

Karen (right, with granddaughter Marina): “I’ve always been happy for Charlotte to dress in whatever way she wanted. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed watching her style evolve, and admire her ability to create fabulous looks on a small budget, often using second-hand clothes. I’d like to see Charlotte in something glamorous, expensive, luxury. She needs to look comfortable in the dress, but it has to be modern and edgy. I’d hate to see her in a regular gown – she needs something dramatic!” @voteforpatmore

Charlotte wears: Top, £350; skirt, £365, both Paris Georgia at Style Odyssey. Shoes, £395, Sophia Webster

CLARE TREMBATH & MUM AMANDA

Amanda: “I learned when Clare was six that it was best to let her get on with it, and I love the way she dresses. However, it’d be great to get rid of those Manchester United socks – which were leftover stock from a football camp (they do make me laugh though) – and smarten her up, as she can look amazing when she does dress up. I like her androgynous look and wouldn’t change it, but I’d add a subtle feminine twist. High-waisted but loose wide-leg or straight trousers, maybe a simple fitted top. She never wears heels but if she did they’d need to make a statement. (I told her I’d put her in jodhpurs and a headscarf à la Princess Anne!)”

Clare wears: Jacket, £510, Paul & Joe. Top, £12.99; trousers, £79.99, both H&M

PAULA AKPAN & MUM THEODORA

Theodora: “I loved those days when Paula was much younger and all I could think about was her next outfit and the different corn-row hairstyles I would get her auntie to do for her. I loved to see Paula in bright colours – hence some of her more interesting outfits when she was a toddler. I don’t see her wear as much colour any more so getting to dress her now has brought back some of those beautiful memories.” @paulaakpan

Paula wears: Dress, £95.99, Zara. Earrings, £10, Accessorize. Other jewellery, her own. Mules, £129, Carvela

EMMA LOW & MUM KAY

Kay: “My immediate thought was colour, as Emma really suits colour but rarely wears it. As a child, I dressed Emma very traditionally so probably put her off for life! As soon as she picked her own clothes, there were no dresses in the mix. Firstly, there was her Avril Lavigne look – baggy jeans, crop tops and poker-straight blonde hair. The Myspace phase was next – hair dyed dark, way too much eyeliner and tops that were several sizes too small. I’d love to see her in something colourful and dressy!” @potyertitsawayluv

Emma wears: Shirt, £530; trousers, £530, both Zimmermann. Earrings, £58, Luv AJ. Boots, £475, Joseph

DOT JONES & MUM JENNY DYSON

Jenny: “There’s not a day when Dot isn’t in a tracksuit. Unless she’s going to a party, in which case it’s usually a tiny dress – like a hankie with straps, which she can get away with. She always looks fab, but I’d love to see what happens when I put her in something quite tomboy. It will be great to see her with natural hair and make-up and flat shoes… something chic!” @pencilagency

Dot wears: Jacket, £630, Frame. Shirt, £30, Weekday. Jeans, £75, Levi’s. Socks, her own. Earrings, £47, Luv AJ. Shoes, £129, Dr Martens
