The party trick

Keep that bottle chilled for at least three hours prior to popping it. After you’ve gathered people to watch your new skills in action (from a safe distance), remove the foil and cage from the cork.

Hold the bottle close to the bottom and angle it up and away from yourself (and your guests). Find the seam on the glass and turn it to face you. Breathe.

Slide the back of your knife up the seam of the bottle’s neck in one strong, swift motion. If all goes well (it will!), the top of the bottle – including the glass lip and cork – will make a safe, clean break. Just don’t forget to ask someone to film your heroics for major party points. ›
