The price point’s high, granted, but this bike is the smoothest I’ve ever ridden, has nine gears, is so stylish and comes in a variety of hues. Electra 2021 Loft 7i EQ Step-Thru, £725
Arguably the most attractive bike around, and the upright riding position is so comfortable. Despite its size it’s surprisingly lightweight and has seven grip-shift gears, so I picked up serious speed with ease. Plus, the padded seat meant no aches, even after a day-long cycle. This commuter really delivered.

I felt pretty cool whizzing around the streets on this faded-purple Cannondale. It’s really light, its (nine-speed) gears change smoothly and you can track your ride speed, distance and calories burned on the app, thanks to an integrated wheel sensor. Cool, huh? Sophie Social Media Manager

A fold-up Brompton might look daunting to a novice, but it only took me three tries to memorise the process. I loved the smooth riding and nippiness, but the deal was sealed when I forgot my lock during a supermarket trip and was able to simply fold it up and carry it in. For short journeys, it’s a dream.

With its chunky tyres, it looks more like a mountain bike than your average hybrid. But after trying it out on a variety of terrains, I found this meant it had far more cushioning and made going up and down kerbs a breeze. This bike is an excellent all-rounder.
