I’m a massive fan of a smoky eye

Your skin changes in type and condition through the years – no one has the same skin quality they had when they were younger. ‘Life – from stress and hormones to diet and pollution – has a big impact, so work with the skin that you have right now. Review your products, routines and treatments to make sure they are doing the most for you. If you’ve been using the same products for the past five years, they are likely no longer serving you.’ Dija Ayodele, skin health specialist

‘Traditionally, they require multiple layers of shadow and meticulous blending until you have biceps that resemble those of Johnny Bravo. Thankfully, I’ve found a much simpler method. Scribble either an eyeshadow stick or gel eyeliner along your lash line – you don’t need to be neat at all. Before it sets, use a pointed eyeshadow brush to buff out the edges and… that’s it. Just repeat on the lower lash line as well. Ever since I learned this, I’ve been able to get ready for fancy events in just under five minutes.’ Hanna Ibraheem, Cosmopolitan deputy beauty editor

Learn to accept and love yourself. ‘It can be really hard to accept ourselves when we see so many examples of beauty that don’t look like us. Choosing to accept ourselves – our skin, our natural texture – and learning to love it is the basis for real beauty. People can see through us when we try to be something we’re not; it’s when we love and accept ourselves that we really shine.’ Andrew Fitzsimons, celebrity hair stylist

Do you want that undone, cool-girl look? ‘Once you’ve done your make-up, put your face over a bowl of hot water so the steam slightly lifts the make-up. You get gently smudged eyes and lips look less set.’ Farrah Storr, former Cosmopolitan editor-in-chief

I used to dab blusher on to the apples of my cheeks and be done. ‘But after working with the industry’s best make-up artists, I learned that it’s better to apply it much higher – across the top of the cheekbones. Use a little fluffy brush to blend the pigment up towards the temples and you’ll get a naturally lifted look. Finish with a touch of blush down the bridge of the nose.’ Victoria Jowett, Cosmopolitan beauty director
