Oneworld, £12.99

The author of this book is a curate in the diocese of Liverpool and offers a delightful insight into the workings of the Anglican Church over the years – or, leastways, the eccentricities of some of the clergy. William Buckland, Dean of Westminster for example, was very fond of mouse on toast. During the Second World War, one naval chaplain used to be wrapped in sacking and pulled through the barrels of his ship’s guns to clean them, like a pipe cleaner. He went on to become the Bishop of Norwich. Oneworld £12.99
