Hang a swing in your garden

A RELAXING SWAY TO WHILE THE TIME AWAY… WHAT’S NOT TO LOVE ABOUT A SWING IN THE TREES, WHATEVER YOUR AGE? THIS SIMPLE ROPED SEAT HAS SWUNG ITS WAY INTO THE HEARTS OF COUNTRY HOMEOWNERS WANTING CAREFREE OPTIONS FOR OUTDOOR LIVING.

what’s the story? With such an elementary design, it’s not surprising that swings, in their various forms, date back to ancient times. Traditionally made from wood and rope, they were hung mainly from tree branches. In more recent times, swings were designed to be hung in different ways – often in metal frames in gardens and parks. In warmer climes, the swing seat has become a more significant piece of furniture, often found on garden decks and porches. Being more bench-like in design, these are hung by metal chains from a frame or ceiling and feature upholstery, canopies or cushions.

which style to choose Ideally, a tree swing needs a large, sturdy branch far enough from the ground to hang from, with appropriate pull and push room. For safety reasons, make sure it is located over level ground with adequate space to swing. If a suitable tree is unavailable, fix a treated metal or wood frame version in position in the garden. Or for a relaxing, grown-up treat, go for a supersized chair or bench version.

style It up Personalise your swing with paint or by adding trimmings to the seat and winding ribbons and flowers around the rope. Seats carved with a name or message on the edge are also available and make a lovely gift.

Tie to a sturdy tree using colourful rope and put a pretty trim round the seat.
