How do you celebrate Christmas?
We asked TV gardener Toby Buckland how he celebrates the festive season with the help of his garden in Devon.
What’s flowering in your garden at this time of
year? our garden is mild, so there’s often the odd rose to be picked, as well as hellebores. my favourite are the waxy blooms of winter-flowering honeysuckle (Lonicera fragrantissima, pictured). Their scent fills the garden. Do you grow your own
Christmas dinner? homegrown kale is the one thing i always have on the menu. i tend to grow the cranberries for the sauce, too. Are any of your household decorations foraged from
the garden? yes! i always make a wreath using the usual holly and ivy but with silver eucalyptus and the fluffy seed heads of old man’s beard (Clematis
vitalba) for sparkle. indoors, the spent blooms of Alliums make big and brilliant natural baubles. Have you been tempted to garden on Christmas day? only once… last time, i sneaked out to ‘tackle something essential’. i inadvertently walked into a low-hanging branch of our apple tree and ended up with a face that made the ‘Ghost of Christmas past’ look a picture.
The ideal gardening gift? an early-bird or Vip ticket to my Garden Festival at powderham Castle, exeter, in may 2019! To find out more, visit tobygarden fest.co.uk.
