PLAN AN ESCAPE TO…

HEAD TO THE LATEST PIGGY RETREAT NEAR PADSTOW IN CORNWALL

The Pig, Harlyn Bay

Anyone who has stayed at a Pig Hotel knows to expect a unique experience. The Grade-ii listed Harlyn Bay house dates back to the 15th century and is full to the brim with Jacobean and Georgian features. A stone’s throw from the village of Harlyn, it has panoramic sea views, which means that there are beaches nearby (Constantine Bay is a highlight). HOME FROM HOME

All rooms have been meticulously designed and brought to life by Judy Hutson who co-founded The Pig Hotels. Her aim is to create a relaxed home-from-home environment that feels opulent but is not fussy or overly formal. Judy has managed to stay true to the history of Harlyn Bay house; its rooms are homely but lavish. The Morning Room is a great example: cosy furniture but so well executed that you feel spoilt. Each communal area is a new experience. The Dining Room feels grand but not formal, and eating in The Scullery is like being in a foodie cafe. There are more than 20 bedrooms: 11 in the Main House and a further 15 in the Stonehouse (a traditional Cornish build with a Delabole slate roof).

BE A BIT PIGGY

As with any home, The Pig has the kitchen at its heart. The menu is guided by the garden and all produce is found within a 25-mile radius (hence the 25 Mile Menu). For dinner, the ‘zero-mile’ beetroot, venison haunch and Padstow lobster will bring joy to winter months. Unique to Harlyn Bay is The Lobster Shed where a wood-fired oven and charcoal-fired grill is used to roast local lobster, char home-grown veg and grill Cornish meat. As this is outside, it is weather dependent; a blanket or two helps with the chill. LOCAL LIFE

Nestled close to the village of Harlyn and near Padstow, the hotel offers some of the most beautiful scenery found in this corner of England. Padstow is known for its food culture (mostly thanks to Rick Stein) and is a great place to while away the hours staring out to sea and eating your own weight in seafood. thepighotel.com
