3 CLEVER DESIGN SOLUTIONS
1 HOUSEKEEPER’S CUPBOARD
Inspired by a traditional cook’s larder, the housekeeper’s cupboard is an impressive width, with refrigeration for food at one end, then a dresser-style middle section with wine storage below, and finally a dried food store at the end nearest the Aga. Here, the oak interior includes a marble ‘cold shelf’ that’s perfect for cheese platters and butter. Herbs and spices are stored neatly on racks behind both doors, and the space also includes an electric socket for a coffee machine or toaster.
2 SHAPELY UPSTANDS
‘We love the detail on the upstands that surround the sink units. This was inspired by old washstand ends. We were looking to add more detail – a vintage touch – to this elevation and Jasper suggested the curved end, bullnose front edge and capping on the main length of upstand. It was pure genius and never fails to make me smile,’ says Jemima. ‘It’s also really practical when wiping up water around the sink, especially when the girls have been “helping” with the dishes!’
3 POT FILLER
While the Mathesons were keen to utilise every inch of their spacious kitchen, at 7.5m long, the journey from Aga to sink was quite a trek. A pot filler was the solution. ‘We didn’t need a second sink, not least because digging out for the extra drainage would have been disruptive and costly, but the pot filler allows water to be topped up when cooking vegetables or pasta, so
I’m not lugging heavy pans around,’ says Jemima. ‘It’s also a beautiful detail, friends often stop to admire it!’
The pot filler is paired with an aged brass utensil rail above, both left unlacquered to naturally patinate with time and use
