3 CLEVER DESIGN SOLUTIONS

-

1 ISLAND

By including a 300mm countertop overhang on two sides, it is possible to fit up to six bar chairs around it, which works well when family and friends come over for Jens’ legendary Japanese nights, when he serves homemade sushi and sashimi. The 3x1.2m island includes plenty of prep and serving space, as well as lots of storage. A wine cooler fitted below the counter on the working side of the island makes it easy to reach for drinks to serve to guests.

2 DRESSER A dresser in the living area is designed to match the kitchen cabinetry, linking the two spaces and providing storage for glassware and china, as well as room for displays. With glass shelves and integrated lighting, the glazed cabinets add a touch of glamour in the evenings. Symmetrical in design, the dresser also includes a central panel which could be used for a wall-hung TV if required later. Finished with coving to match the kitchen and a base-level plinth, the large freestanding piece of furniture adds a note of grandeur.

3 STREAMLINING THE DESIGN

At about 200 years old, the house presented fitting challenges due to wonky walls, pillars that could not be moved and a lath and plaster ceiling that could not be damaged by wiring. To make the furniture look as if it had always been there, all the cabinets were scribed to fit the wall angles. An extractor is concealed in the chimney breast above the range and in the wall cabinet above the hob, so no need for ceiling ducting, while lights have been fixed to the beams to avoid affecting the ceiling.
