Off with a bang
THE number of dogs that go missing on or around Bonfire Night is increasing, says The Kennel Club (KC), which is recommending owners make sure their pet’s microchip details are up to date before everything kicks off.
Microchipping became compulsory in April 2016, but KC statistics show that 9% of dogs still don’t have one and 53% of microchips are registered with incorrect owner details.
‘Research shows that 40% of dogs are scared of fireworks,’ says a spokesperson. ‘The experience can be terrifying for dogs and result in them behaving unpredictably, which could put their safety at risk.’ Further KC tips include acclimatising your dog with special noise CDS, having the TV or radio on during fireworks, keeping windows and curtains shut and feeding your dog before the bangs begin in case he becomes too anxious to eat. Obviously, don’t take your dog to a fireworks display as he’s unlikely to enjoy it and don’t tell him off if he behaves strangely. Visit www. kennelclub.org.uk for more.
