Lead us not into temptation

IREAD with interest Agromenes’s article ‘’Tis the season for a rip-off’ (October 17), when he wrote of Black Friday tempting us to buy ‘yet more things we can do without’. It brought to mind the story of a judge dealing with a court case involving the prolific door-to-door credit-selling that went on in the 1930s and beyond. I seem to recall that he defined the process as being ‘persuaded by a man you don’t know to buy something you don’t want with money you haven’t got’. I guess the technique is alive and well today—and thriving on the internet. Robin Heslop, Birmingham
