A not-so-welcome break
FOR YEARS, we have used National Trust houses as our motorway service stations (‘How to be a happy motorist’, October 17). However, increasingly, the Trust has been confounding this source of revenue by moving car parks far from the house or refreshment locations.
You mention Dyrham Park (above) near Bristol, which we’ve used many times—but, now, the car park is next to the eastern boundary and the dreary bus ride takes so long that the stopover isn’t practical. Further, Dyrham has moved its cafe from the orangery to a dismal room in the service yard.
Come on National Trust, COUNTRY LIFE is quite right—respond and rise to the opportunities! Philip Proctor, Dorset
