FLORENCE is heavenly all year round and the place to stay is the newly renovated Lungarno, on the bank of the River Arno, with views onto the Ponte Vecchio. Freshly decked out like the smartest of yachts—it’s all polished wood, blue and white fabrics and chic photography— it made me plan an entire interior rehaul when I got home. The beds are a highlight and if the delicious breakfast hadn’t been calling my name, I could quite easily have stayed put, gazing out at the water from the window. This year marks the 90th anniversary of the House of Ferragamo, which owns the Lungarno Collection of hotels in Florence (hop over the river in five minutes for a cocktail at my favourite spot, La Terrazza Continentale on the roof terrace of the Lungarno’s sister hotel, which is heated all year round). Next year is the 500th anniversary of Leonardo Da Vinci’s death, so it’s definitely the time to visit—the Uffizi has already started celebrating as of this month with a special exhibition. Double rooms at Hotel Lungarno from £378 (00 39 055 2726 4000; www.lungarno collectel-lungarno)
