When it comes to keeping a close eye on the weather forecast, racehorse trainers are nearly as obsessed as farmers, especially given that the fortunes of both professions are so governed by the state of the ground. It’s therefore a dead cert that, at Colin Tizzard’s yard on the outskirts of the village of Milborne Port on the Dorset/ Somerset borders–from where the dairy-turned-beef farmer and National Hunt trainer sent out last year’s Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, Native River– the sodden going will be dictating Team Tizzard’s New Year racing programme. One thing’s for sure, however– the yard’s string of top-class horses will be exercised every morning on the gallops (as pictured here), which snake through the fields and up through the wooded hill on the family’s Venn Farm, come rain or shine.
