Another niche interest, I suppose, might have been observed in one of the very first sales of the first New York TEFAF fair, at the Park Avenue Armory from October 22 to 26—an event that seems to have gone as well as its handsome presentati­on fully deserved. At the early-access VIP preview, Tomasso Brothers of Leeds sold a terracotta relief, measuring 14¼in by 20in (in the original frame) for about $200,000.

By Johan Tobias Sergel (1740–1814), perhaps the greatest 18thcentur­y Swedish sculptor and draughtsma­n, the subject of a lusty satyr and his nymph (above)—inspired by antiquity, but also the artist’s nocturnal wanderings in Rome—might have destined it for a Trumpish locker room, but, in fact, it went to a European collector.
