Lamp box
These account for 39% of our letterboxes and were first introduced in London in 1896, in response to complaints from middle-class letter writers, who wanted to post letters late at night without a long walk. By the time of the Second World War, lamp boxes had proliferated in the countryside and, where there’s no convenient pole, they stand on their own pedestal.
