What to see this week

From Rocken End to Binnel is at the Clayden Gallery, Quay Arts, Newport Harbour, Isle of Wight from April 8 to May 1 (01983 822490; www.quayarts.org) The Isle of Wight still exerts a strong hold on the two sisters whose first joint show this is. They grew up here to the rhythm of the waves, drawing and painting, swimming and beachcombing. Molly Attrill, who trained with Michael Leach, makes pots using local clays and beautifully observed birds and fish (www.mollyattrillpottery.weebly.com). Painter Bridget Macdonald (www.bridgetmacdonald.co.uk) lives in Worcestershire, but returns regularly. Included are her new lighthouse paintings and a sequence of tiny ink drawings (above: Magpie ).

Giacomo Balla: Designing the Future is at the Estorick Collection, 39a, Canonbury Square, London N1, until June 25 (020–7704 9522; www.estorickcollection.com) Drawn from the Biagiotti Cigna Collection, this show features abstract and figurative paintings, applied art, fashion and furniture designs by one of the pioneers of Futurism, Giacomo Balla (1871–1958).

Constable and Brighton is at Brighton Museum and Art Gallery, Royal Pavilion Gardens, Brighton, East Sussex, from April 8 to October 8 (03000 290900; www. brightonmuseums.org.uk) More than 60 of the artist’s

sketches, drawings and paintings made in Brighton, where he spent extended periods with his family in the 1820s.

The Arborealists is at Nature in Art, Wallsworth Hall, Twigworth, Gloucestershire, from April 11 to May 14 (01452 731422; www.natureinart.org.uk) Works by members of the eponymous group founded in 2013, whose focus on the versatile subject of the tree— themes ranging from botany to ecology—is expressed in diverse artistic styles.
