Children’s bedrooms and what’s in and out for 2019
This bedroom is in a listed Georgian rectory in Oxfordshire that its owners use as a weekend home. As part of the renovation, they decided to add some personality to the anonymous interior and enlisted the help of the designers Katie Glaister and henry Miller Robinson of Kh design.
‘The brief was to create a bedroom with a romantic princess theme, decorated in their daughter’s favourite shade of pink,’ says henry. The walls were subsequently painted in Edward Bulmer’s Cuisse de Nymphe Emue (01544 388535; www.edwardbulmerpaint.co.uk): ‘The soft, dusty-pink shade was inspired by the subtle pink of old English roses.’
A pair of coronets, found in a junk shop in Wales, is the centrepiece of the design; each is hung with a flowing muslin drape trimmed with samuel & sons Lancaster Fan Edge (www.samuelandsons.com; 020–7351 5153) and tied with satin ribbons; the extra-tall pink velvet-upholstered headboards enhance the regal feel of the scheme. Child-size beds were made specially for the room and fitted with antique bun feet.
The scheme includes other unusual finds, including a vintage wall mirror and an apple-shaped pouffe. ‘We like to use pieces that seem as if they’ve been with the family for years,’ says Katie. ‘it’s the eclectic nature that makes a room feel like home.’
At the window are curtains handembroidered in a pastoral design: Chelsea Textiles’ Counting Sheeps linen (020– 7584 0111; www.chelseatextiles.com), specially made with extra pink blossom woven into the design to co-ordinate with the room scheme.
‘We always try to plan for the future in a child’s bedroom,’ says Katie. ‘in years to come, as the little girl grows, it will be easy to pick out other colours from the curtains to redecorate the room.’ Amelia Thorpe K&H Design (020–7736 3610; www. kandhdesign.co.uk)
