Music and no movement: how it’s done

-

❍ First, check your internet speed at http://speedtest.net. You’ll need a connection greater than 2Mbit/s upload and download. Your Space Music Lessons offers a free introductory taster session and a version of Skype is available free, so there are no initial financial commitments.

❍ If you’re not familiar with Skype (or any of the other live internet audiovisual connection technologies such as Google Hangouts or Zoom), allow plenty of time to download and sample the software, possibly recruiting a more technologically minded helper. You’ll need to provide your username in advance so that the teacher can check they’re able to contact you. Don’t be put off by the set-up stage— it’s more intuitive than it sounds. ❍ Before the lesson, log in to Skype in good time and ensure that you’re contactable. Just like any other music lesson, you’ll get more out of it if you prepare your sheet music and warm up in advance. Check your camera angle and brush your hair. ❍ Make sure your microphone is on and that the tutor can see your hand positions and/or embouchure. Nonmillennials may need to adjust to seeing themselves mirrored on a small screen, but try to relax and engage with the lesson. In between lessons, log into your Skype account as teachers may send you files. Then… practise! ❍ Instruments taught include guitar, bagpipes and saxophone. Lessons start at £33 for three 30-minute sessions (www.yourspacemusiclessons.com; 01876 688810)
