IT is a truth universally acknowledged that behind every successful woman is a meticulously planned wardrobe. Ok, that might not be true—but it’s certainly a truth universally known that the right outfit and handbag will leave you feeling ready to take on the world. It’s a truth that Lalage Beaumont is well aware of and this shines through her new autumn/winter collection, both in the bags and the readyto-wear clothing.

Three new handbags, each handcrafted by artisans, will be joining the range of luxury leather accessories on show at the Knightsbridge store. ‘The new bags are inspired by vintage 1960s styles that I have loved and collected over the years,’ says Lalage, who honed her skills at fashion houses including Mulberry. ‘Cocktail bags, in particular in the 1950s

and 1960s, had very neat shapes, which can now be seen in the resurgence of the framed bag on the runways.’ Each of the three designs takes its name from the ballet and is the epitome of timeless elegance. The Odette, in the style of a mini briefcase with an envelope flap, can be carried in the hand or across the body and comes in two sizes—making it perfect for work or play—in croc print in taupe, dark green or wine calf leather. The ultra elegant, mediumsized Sylphide—also croc-print calf leather in stone, black or dark green—is practical yet refined, being hand-held with an optional shoulder strap. The final addition, Carmen, is still structured, but more capacious with longer handles, making it ideal for tote lovers who like to have everything to hand. It is available in black or wine croc calf leather or palmellato-print calf leather in taupe or black. Alongside the new styles, the all-time favourite Fonteyn can be found in beautiful orange and metallic shades and a variety of leathers, including snakeskin.

Whichever takes your fancy, any one of these bags would be shown to maximum advantage alongside Lalage’s sleek and wearable tailoring. The new ready-to-wear collection, made in London, stays true to her ethos of using exquisite, high-quality materials and timeless silhouettes.

‘The inspiration came from wanting to create pieces that could be worn in a multitude of situations, from a business meeting to an evening event,’ explains the designer. ‘This collection is suitable for all occasions, for now and the future.’ The star is undoubtedly the distinctive Cortina shearling maxi coat, which would make a statement in any company—as well as keeping you warm yet stylish on the chilliest of days. Other bestsellers in the making are the Iona jacket in navy with matching trousers, as well as the long-sleeved, 1960s-style Tina dress. Of course, Lalage’s collection wouldn’t exclude her co-ordinated outfits, made of exquisite tweed fabrics and silks, ideal for special occasions. Whatever your style, if you appreciate ‘feminine clothes without the frills’ that will transcend the fickle nature of high fashion, there will be something for you at Lalage Beaumont. Perhaps, even, everything you need. To discover more of the new collection, visit Lalage Beaumont at 58, Beauchamp Place, Knightsbridge, London SW3 1NZ (020– 7584 9977; www.lalagebeaumont.com)
