The way we were Photographs from the Country Life archive
1935 Unpublished
Herstmonceux Castle, East Sussex, of the 1440s, photographed at night with an electric light at every window and arrow loop. The exterior was recorded with floodlighting, too, also a striking novelty at the time. The ruin had recently been restored by two consecutive owners, Claude Lowther and Sir Paul Latham. The latter installed a generator.
Every week for the past 125 years, COUNTRY LIFE has documented and photographed many walks of life in Britain. More than 80,000 of the images are available for syndication or purchase in digital format. To view the archives, visit
