• Unless you really are svelte, avoid skinny jeans. ‘If you have a waist over, say, 36in, be confident with your waist size and don’t try to pour yourself into something too small,’ says

Brant Richards of jeans manufacturer Hebtro.

‘Get straight-leg jeans’

• Should you tuck a shirt into your jeans? ‘If you’re thin, tuck it in,’ advises personal stylist Phill Tarling. If you’re not thin, leave your shirt untucked, but ensure the shirt tails aren’t too long

• Want to ensure you look smart, not scruffy, when wearing jeans? Consider teaming them with a tie and jacket, but try a woolen, knitted or even a bow tie. ‘This can look sporty, preppy and classy,’ believes Mr Tarling

• Avoid ‘builder’s bum’ by ensuring you buy a pair with a good rear rise—this is the distance from the crotch to the waist—but not a high front rise, otherwise you will look like Simon Cowell

• Try to wash your jeans only very sparingly. If they start to smell, pop them into the freezer
