Pick of the week
Andrew Sim, who discovers or disinters artists of the World Wars, has not had his annual show in Shepherd Market, but he has more than enough fascinating things to show at Olympia. The slogan from the Ministry of Information ‘Careless Talk costs Lives’ poster campaign is most associated with the Minimalist genius Fougasse (Cyril Kenneth Bird, 1887–1965), but, naturally, other artists were inspired by it. These included a young sailor, James Robinson, who was seconded to the Royal Navy Film Unit to produce storyboards because of his draughtsmanship skills. This example (above) shows a corner of a railway carriage in 1943 and, perhaps, owes a little to another cartoon genius of the day, Pont.
