Weaver’s web
IWAS pleased to read of the influential role played by my grandfather Lawrence Weaver in the early history of COUNTRY LIFE (January 5). Weaver was a close friend of Edward Hudson, as illustrated in this picture of Hudson, his amour Guilhermina Suggia, Weaver (standing) and his wife, Kathleen (far right), picnicking in the early 1920s on Lindisfarne. Weaver contributed more than 500 articles during his term as Architectural Editor and these have been invaluable resources to historians of architecture and houses. Little is known about how Weaver came to be appointed to this post. I am working on a biography of his early life and should be glad to hear from readers who know anything about the architect William Youlton of Finsbury Square and the engineering firm Lockerbie & Wilkinson, where Weaver worked from 1894–1905.
