His life through his eyes
THE first exhibition to examine van Gogh’s selfportraiture throughout the entirety of his career opens tomorrow at the
Courtauld Gallery,
London WC2. The show gathers about half of the Dutch artist’s self-portraits, many of which were last seen together in his studio. Joining Self-portrait with Bandaged Ear, which normally hangs in the Courtauld, are, among others, the 1886 Self-portrait with a Dark Felt Hat, the 1887 Self-portrait with a Grey Felt Hat (pictured) and Self-portrait with Palette, which van Gogh painted in 1889, a year before his death. ‘Van Gogh: Self-portraits’ is at the Courtauld’s new Denise Coates exhibition galleries until May 8 (www.courtauld.ac.uk).
