Something old is new

-

YOU have recently carried items about gas lamps (Town & Country, January 26; ‘Show me the way to go home’, November 13, 2019) and telegraph poles (‘Telegraph-pole appreciation for beginners’, January 19) gradually or imminently disappearing. I thought your readers would benefit from knowing that the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway in West Yorkshire has a comprehensive telephone system still relying on telegraph poles throughout its entire length. Perhaps even better, it provides the third largest public gaslighting service in the UK. The system uses town gas and, far from contracting, is expanding. Both telephone and gas systems are in daily use and maintained by qualified volunteers. David Pearson, West Yorkshire
