The way we were Photographs from the Country Life archive
1907 October 26
An almsman reads in the Hospital of Saints John the Baptist and John the Evangelist, Sherborne, Dorset. He appears immersed in his book, although the scene is probably staged. The fall of light echoes the aesthetic of 17th-century Dutch painting that inspired the magazine’s early photography. The caption simply read: ‘Peace within the walls.’
Every week for the past 125 years, COUNTRY LIFE has documented and photographed many walks of life in Britain. More than 80,000 of the images are available for syndication or purchase in digital format. To view the archives, visit
