Refreshingly bone dry
Aldi, Winemaster’s Lot Rosé, Côtes de Provence Pierrefeu, France 2020. £7.49, Aldi, alc 13%
This Grenache-syrah-cinsault blend is the pick of Aldi’s new seasonal line of rosés. Refreshingly bone dry with citrus acidity, the creamy palate is filled with tangy summer-pudding fruit. The Specially Selected Chilean Organic Rosé 2021 (£6.99) is also good. Online and in store.
Lemon, herb and apple
Gordon Ramsay, Vibrante Bianco, Abruzzo/tuscany, Italy 2020. £10, Tesco, Wine Delivered, alc 12.5%
A collaboration between chef Gordon Ramsay and winemaker Alberto Antonini, combining 25% Tuscan Vermentino with Abruzzo Chardonnay, Trebbiano and Pecorino, giving bright lemon, herb and apple aromas and a light, fresh palate.
Yeasty character
Waitrose, No1 Castillo Perelada Brut, Cava, Penedès, Spain 2018. £10.79, Waitrose, alc 11.5% As so often with Cava, you get good value for money here. Made using the Champagne method, this is brut in style, with 8g/l residual sugar, and has an expressive yeasty and warm leesy character, with good acidity and elegant lemon citrus notes.
Ripe-cherry core
Barone Ricasoli, Castello di Brolio, Chianti Classico Gran Selezione, Tuscany, Italy 2018. £43.33, Millésima, alc 14%
This Gran Selezione is youthful, but drinking well, its sweet core of ripe red and black cherries framed by integrated tannins and smooth acidity. Licks of spice, vanilla pod, wood, violets, tar and herbs lend complexity and potential.
