This image of the Regency pagoda in Berkeley Square was probably taken for an article about London squares by the artist William Orpen published on May 17, 1924. Berkeley Square was enclosed in 1766–67 with ‘a grass plot... a gravel walk round, and iron pallisadoes’. Its oldest plane trees were planted in 1789 by Edward Bouverie.

Every week for the past 125 years, COUNTRY LIFE has documented and photographed many walks of life in Britain. More than 80,000 of the images are available for syndication or purchase in digital format. To view the archives, visit www. countrylifeimages.co.uk and email enquiries to licensing@ futurenet.com
