Perfumed prune

Morrisons, The Best Negroamaro, Puglia, Italy 2020. £7.25, Morrisons, alc 13.5% No oak here, pure and concentrated with a rich bouquet of fresh blackberry, dark cherry and prunes. Lovely roundness and weight on the juicy, dark fruit-driven palate, with sufficient acidity to refresh. Perfumed prune and dried berries on the finish.

Green-pepper crunch

Waitrose, No1 Astrolabe Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough, New Zealand 2020. £11.99, Waitrose, alc 13.5%

This classy Sauvignon Blanc is from the Awatere Valley, which typically produces wines less tropical than those from other New Zealand areas. Green-pepper crunch, warm lemon pith and lime citrus, a streak of refreshing acidity. Tangy and harmonious.

One for the haters

Château de Pizay, Morgon, Beaujolais, France 2020. £12.99, Majestic, alc 14% Alluring, with a perfumed nose of black cherries, plums and violets. Very smooth on the palate with vibrancy of fruit and a refreshing, almost mineral lift. It’s surprisingly long, with lingering flavours of mulberry and poached plum. One to convert the Beaujolais haters.

Pithy finish

Pierre Morin, Ovide, Sancerre, Loire, France 2018. £27, The Sourcing Table, alc 13%

Not what you might expect from a Sancerre, this has a vibrancy and energy that will put a smile on your face. Liquorice, fennel, anise and zippy lemon freshness culminate in an intensely textural wine, with tangy apple acidity, mineral drive and a pithy finish.
