Take a bow
IRECENTLY caught this strange phenomenon on an early-morning walk with my dog, when it appeared in a break in the fog for a few minutes. I have never seen anything quite like it and wonder if there is a proper name for it—and why there is no refraction of the light, leaving a monochrome bow? Timothy O’brien, Wiltshire
The Editor replies: This appears to be a fogbow, or ‘white rainbow’, formed from the interaction between sunlight and water droplets in fog, mist or cloud—as opposed to raindrops
