These days, I spend a lot of my time on my bike, raising money for various organisations. My favourite to ride is the Bianchi road bike (Fausto Coppi, the famous Italian cyclist, rode one). One favourite route of his (and mine) is to the Madonna del Ghisallo church above Bellagio on Lake Como in Italy (www.bianchi.com).

I have realised that many of my favourite things nod to my Italian background. My father, Vincenzo, was from the Piedmont region (where my favourite Gaja Barbaresco wine is also produced). I enjoy going to organised shoots and have fallen in love with my Beretta hunting rifle from Brescia, northern Italy; my father had one and Nick Foulkes wrote a book on Beretta, which I thoroughly enjoyed (020–7408 4411; www.berettagallery.com).

Away from Italy, I have admiration for what Nick and Giles English are trying to achieve at Bremont. Its current partnership with the RFU led me to choose this fantastic piece, the Bremont Rose, which I wear on match days as a reminder of my playing days and all the times I have spent looking at the stadium clock awaiting the final whistle. £4,995 (0800 817 4281; www.bremont.com).
