The Linnel line

READING the lovely article on Fell ponies (‘For he’s a jolly good Fell’, March 23), I was surprised to find no mention of the late Roy Charlton, whose famous Linnel ponies feature in most Fell pedigrees. His stallion Lingcropper roamed the fells at Crook a Beck, Patterdale, Cumbria, with his mares. I believe that Windsor Gypsy, mentioned in the article and driven by The Queen (when Princess Elizabeth) with her sister at Windsor Horse Show, in fact started life as Linnel Gypsy.
