Wines of the week
Exuberantly aromatic
Waitrose, Loved & Found Fernão Pires, Western Cape, South Africa 2021. £6.99, Waitrose Cellar, alc 12.5%
Portuguese grape Fernão Pires, transported to South Africa’s Breede River Valley. Crisp and satisfying, this has seen a little skin contact and lees stirring. It’s exuberantly aromatic, reminiscent of Sauvignon Blanc, with snow pea, citrus and pineapple juiciness.
White-peach palate
Sainsbury’s, Taste the Difference Gaillac Blanc, South-west France 2020. £8, Sainsbury’s, alc 12%
An unusual white blend of local grape Len de l’el with 7% Mauzac. Bright aromas of apples, pears and fresh lemon. Time on lees adds creaminess to the orchard fruit and white-peach palate, with crisp acidity. Great value.
Rose and rhubarb
The Blind Spot, Pinot Meunier, Yarra Valley, Victoria, Australia 2021. £12.95, The Wine Society, alc 11%
Winemaker Mac Forbes scours Australia for top parcels of grapes and the bespoke bottlings are offered exclusively to Wine Society members. From 20-year-old vines formerly used for sparkling wine, this pale, unoaked, unfiltered red shows lifted strawberry purée, grenadine, rose and tangy rhubarb and raspberry pip notes with vibrant, spritzy acidity. Enjoy cool, but not cold to ensure all that perfume shines.
Flinty finish
Vino di Anna, Qvevri Rosso, Etna, Sicily, Italy 2019. £30.60, Les Caves de Pyrene, alc 13% This is 100% Nerello Mascalese, fermented in qvevri and aged in old oak for nine months. Elegant and poised, with vibrant fruit (plum, sour cherry, wild strawberries) lined by smoky and herbal notes. Mineral backbone and filigree acidity supports a flinty finish.
